Nuclear reactor decommissioning represents one of the most hazardous engineering challenges facing modern civilization. When reactors reach the end of their operational lives, technicians must safely remove radioactive materials, dismantle complex systems, and decontaminate facilities—work that exposes human workers to dangerous radiation levels. Until now, wireless communication systems have been nearly impossible to implement in reactor environments because radiation damages standard electronics and disrupts signal transmission. Graduate student Yasuto Narukiyo's development of a radiation-resistant Wi-Fi receiver fundamentally changes this calculus, potentially enabling remote-operated or autonomous robots to handle tasks that currently demand human workers accept significant health risks.
